Introduction. Prospects for further development and post-war recovery of Ukraine's economy call for searching new promising and economically feasible directions for the development of industries and breakthrough technologies. In Ukraine and globally, one of such possible directions is the development of titanium dioxide production based on new environmentally safe technologies.
Materials and methods. The methodological basis of the research includes various general and special scientific methods, such as the dialectical method of cognition, analysis and synthesis, generalization of information, monographic research, abstraction, comparison, statistical methods of the research on digital data.
Results and discussion. The conducted studies have shown that the global titanium dioxide market, being one of the largest in the worldwith a volume of about 21 billion dollars (in 2021), dynamically grows and develops due to the expansion of the product range, increased sales, and new areas of the product’s use. Technologies for the production of titanium dioxide, which are used in the world, are still imperfect and environmentally hazardous. Two Ukrainian enterprises that previously produced titanium dioxide are not working today due to various reasons. “Crimean titanium” with the chlorine based method of production is located in the occupied territory, and the facilities for the production of pigment titanium dioxide by the sulfate method, existing at PJSC “SUMYKHIMPROM”, are currently under rehabilitation and need to be re-equipped. Therefore, based on the analysis of titanium dioxide markets, and technologies of titanium dioxide production, the article shows prospects for the development of this industry in Ukraine based on new hydrometallurgical technologies.
Conclusions. The restoration of titanium dioxide production in Ukraine should become one of the priority tasks, it should be carried out based on new ecologically safe and economically profitable technologies, for which it is necessary to finalize the existing research projects of Ukrainian scientists in the titanium industry. New technologies for obtaining titanium dioxide would make it possible to produce high-quality material with a high degree of purity (97-99 %) with the highest added value, increased completeness of raw material processing (extraction of titanium dioxide within 92-95 %) and the possibility of obtaining titanium dioxide from poor ilmenite ores with a titanium content from 42 %.
